We really enjoyed our stay at the Viceroy Zihuatanejo earlier this month. Although we have stayed there before (review can be found here), this was our first stay with George. The following review reflects our experience traveling as a family, including an infant.
The Viceroy is one of the few properties in Zihuatanejo that allows children as guests. That being said, it never feels like there are kids everywhere. The property is expansive, yet has a very intimate feel. Although there are 35 rooms and 35 suites spread out among the property, it is easy to feel that you are still in a very private environment.
Location – The hotel is about 15 minutes from the Zihuatanejo Airport. The hotel is located right on La Ropa Beach and features breathtaking views of the water. The hotel is not in a noisy area and is generally very tranquil. There is a taxi stand just down the street, making it very easy to get one when you need it.
Customer Service – Service at the hotel was exceptional. We never wanted for anything and we were always treated warmly and graciously by staff. No one ever made a face when they saw that we had a small baby in our party. In fact, everyone went out of their way to accommodate us. We only had to ask for an extra napkin, high chair and small bowl once…every other time we dined the staff brought all of these items immediately for our baby. Staff also placed a high chair in our room in advance of our arrival. This came in handy when dined in the room. From check-in to check-out, we were treated like family.
Accommodations – Thanks to a fantastic promotional offer, we were in a two-bedroom suite overlooking the beach. Our promotional rate included 30% off the normal room rate, plus a daily $150.00 credit. Given that we spent so much time in our room, this was a great deal for us. Our room had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large covered terrace, outdoor bar, plunge pool, outdoor dining table and chairs, hammock and lounge furniture. The room also came with an indoor bar, desk area, very large closets, refrigerator and a TV. I think the room would work well for families traveling together, although our room had several sets of internal steps — not necessarily the greatest floor plan for mobile children. We were in Beach Suite 2, perched just above one of the pools and nearby the La Villa restaurant.
Amenities – The hotel features 3 large pools (including one specifically for adults), tennis courts, a gym, 3 outdoor bars (including a swim up bar), a fine dining restaurant (Marea), casual restaurant (La Villa), a bar (Bar Coral), beach palapas, beach beds, a boutique, a spa and lots of space for lounging and relaxing. The hotel also offers in-room dining and can arrange for any activity or service you would like – from nanny service to a sunset cruise to a fishing expedition. Ask and you shall receive.
Family Friendly – This hotel is incredibly family friendly. On our trip, there were several small children there and several multi-generational families enjoying the property.
Member Recognition – There is no formal member recognition program with Viceroy, but the fact that everyone remembered us from last year (and year’s prior) is enough recognition.
We hope to return to Viceroy Zihuatanejo in the near future and would recommended it to anyone wanting a relaxing and romantic, or family, getaway.
