A few months ago, John and I pledged to make a trip to South Texas to visit my extended family. In addition to my grandparents, we have many aunts, uncles and cousins that we haven’t seen in over a year (and much longer, in some cases). After comparing schedules, Memorial Day weekend was a great time for us to break away and head south — so we did.
We left Friday afternoon and spent far too long in Sugarland traffic. While the area is nice, I simply cannot handle commuter traffic. Blerg. God bless those of you who make that drive, or a similar drive, on a daily basis. Our drive took four hours and we made two quick visits to two of my favorite stops on the drive — Prasek’s (in Hillje) and Dairy King (in Taft). Good Times.
Once we made it to Portland, we immediately passed out. On Saturday morning, we had an interesting time finding a gym to use. Because our hotel gym was under construction, and the gym at the neighboring hotel was a hell hole, we ended up at Anytime Fitness. After three hours of trying to find a place to sweat, it all worked out. Workouts accomplished — sweet.
Later, I got ready and made my way to Corpus Christi for a baby shower honoring my cousin Mandy. I met my Mom there and had a great time visiting with family and friends. Here I am with my cousins Mandy (due in July) and Valerie (had her 4th baby earlier this month!) and Natalia (a family friend).
My Mom had a ball holding all of the babies there — she can’t wait to be a Grandma. Then, we went back to Portland and visited Grandma C and my Aunt M and Uncle S. Grandma is 87 and still full of stories. She tells me that she is excited to be a great-grandmother again.
Afterwards, my parents took John and me to dinner, and then we all went to Taft to visit my maternal grandparents. My Grandpa G is suffering from Alzheimer’s and Grandma G is suffering from emphysema and recovering from a recent fall. Needless to say, it was great to see them both and to spend time with them. Grandma G gave me some parenting and maternity advice — all good stuff. Fun Fact — guess what Grandma’s favorite TV show is? Law and Order (Grandma was watching a marathon while we were there). Guess who her favorite character is? Finn – yes, Ice T. Dear Friends, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree (although Benson is clearly my favorite).
Today, we went to early mass with my parents and ate afterwards at a fantastic taqueria in Portland. Too much food, but such a good time. John and I left town after breakfast in order to take care of some family and work-related business back in Houston. Now we’re back at home crossing things off our to-do lists. I hope you are enjoying the long weekend!
