Since I have had a lot of questions about where we stayed while on vacation, I’m providing the following hotel reviews:
Hotel Eden – Rome
In Rome we stayed at the Hotel Eden. Due to my loyal travel with the Starwood hotel chain, I had enough points to stay at this hotel free of charge. Also, thanks to my Platinum status with Starwood, we were able to check in early and get a room upgrade. Score! We were given a rather large room with nice amenities. The hotel is located close to the Spanish Steps and well within walking distance to many nice restaurants, shops and things to sight-see. John and I would stay at this hotel again – we had a really nice experience there. The staff and service were excellent and the concierge really went out of his way to make sure we were taken care of. As a side note, I should note that the President of Argentina stayed at our hotel while we were there (she was in town for the Republic Day Celebration along with other dignitaries like VP Joe Biden!). As a result, the hotel was swarmed with security of all types – Italian police, Argentinean Secret Service (hello, boys!) and private security from the hotel (including specially trained dogs). It was madness, but boy did I feel safe!
Hotel Excelsior – Naples
In Naples we stayed at the Hotel Excelsior – a member of the Starwood Luxury Collection. Due to my loyal travel with the Starwood hotel chain, I also had enough points to also stay at this hotel free of charge. Also, thanks to my Platinum status with Starwood, we were able to check in early and get another room upgrade. Double Score! We were given a rather large room with nice amenities, including a large balcony and view of the Gulf of Naples. The hotel was very grand and was brimming with elegance. Our room was very nice and spacious – especially given European standards. The bed was very comfortable and was complete with a bedside unit that controlled lights, temperature, room service, maid service and the infamous black out shades. We enjoyed delicious food in their downstairs restaurant for breakfast and at their rooftop restaurant for dinner. Additionally, the concierge at the hotel was very helpful making reservations for dinner and helping with trip logistics. The hotel is located in a very nice area and is within walking distance of shopping and restaurants. It is also across the street from a Castle! We would stay at this hotel again in the future and I would recommend it to others.
Covo Dei Saraceni – Positano
While in Positano we stayed at the Covo Dei Saraceni. This hotel is DIVINE. It is pricey, but worth every penny! We booked a room with a view and balcony and were very pleased when we saw the room in person. It was very spacious and included a sitting room and balcony with sweeping views of the bay and the Cliffside. The hotel is located on the water and is a stone’s throw from the nicest shopping and dining in Positano. Our hotel room tariff included a breakfast buffet. As a general rule, I loathe hotel buffets. I could spend way too much time listing the reasons why, but the main ones include people touching everything, food that has been set out too long and questionable food quality. This buffet, however, was different. Everything was fresh and the buffet was constantly refreshed with lots and lots of food options. As a bonus, the hotel also provided us with great toiletries created by Etro. Yes, every day we found another gift bag full of nice toiletries in our bathroom. Nice, huh?
Villa Brunella – Capri
Oh how we loved Villa Brunella! Villa Brunella is family owned and has an amazing pool, restaurant, bar, staff…get the idea? This hotel is pricey (most are in Capri), but it is worth it. We loved our room – it was quiet, well-appointed and included a great private balcony. The concierge was incredibly helpful and knowledgable and absolutely helped us make our Capri experience even better than we expected. Our only wish is that we could have spent more time there! Hopefully we will make a return visit!
Westin Excelsior – Rome
In Rome we stayed at the Westin Excelsior – a member of the Starwood Collection. Due to my loyal travel with the Starwood hotel chain…actually we had to pay for these rooms. Located next to the US Embassy, this hotel is AMAZING. Check out the room they gave us.
Tall ceilings, chandeliers, two balconies, large sitting area, huge walk in closet, marble bathroom…this room was fantastic! Clearly, this room was an upgrade because we don’t usually drop $1,200 a night on a hotel room! 😉 As you might imagine, we would stay here again in a heartbeat…and hope and pray for a repeat upgrade!
